Is it possible to get licenses for Russian trucks?

Recommended Posts

I'm just curious, since Focus Home got licensing from pretty much all the major American truck brands, would it be possible to get licensing for the Russian ones, or is there some kind of legal issue with it?

The problem is, that in Eastern Bloc some things were different. KamAZ, KrAZ or MAZ were rather factory names than "brands" of the product. The product was itself named differently (like Type 4310 from KaMAZ). Sometimes same product could be produced in different factory and was named differently. Also, it was all state stuff, not private business contracted by the state like you had in the West.

Here is an automotive example. GAZ (Gorky Automotive Factory) manufactured 4x4 car Type 69, labeled as GAZ-69. After a while production was discontinued, and years later restarted in UAZ (Ulyanovsk Automotive Factory), labeled as UAZ-69. Official name was still GAZ-69 though... You could say UAZ-69 is car of the GAZ-69 type. And it's just a tip of the iceberg...

Now, if the factory still exists, it doesn't have to hold copyrights for older types of vehicles produced in it (because there was no copyrights, plans were distributed by state both internally and to other countries), while it holds the brand. Former USSR factories are now in different countries too - Ukraine (KrAZ, and out of game ZAZ and LuAZ) , Belarus (MAZ, BelAZ), Georgie (KAZ), Armenia, (JerAZ)... Even if depicted vehicles are originating only in Russia (Zil, KamAZ, GAZ, UAZ, Ural), Ukraine (KrAZ) and Belarus (MAZ), you can imagine the problems.
